WE PLAY, MEASURE AND CONVERT!

Good afternoon guys! Today we are going to learn about... THE LENGTH!

Have you ever wondered how long your arm, your case, the schoolyard... or the distance between home and school? ¡Then you are thinking of LENGTH!

Today we’re going to discover what it is, how it’s measured, with which tools and why it’s so important for our daily lives.

What is length?

Length is a way of measuring the distance between two points. It is used to know how much something measures in a straight line. It can be the length of a table, the height of a shelf, or even the distance you run.

Measure with the body... rather than with numbers

Before using rulers, measuring tapes or units like centimeter and metre, it is essential that students understand what measurement means. And the best way to do it is to measure with your own body, with everyday objects, with their immediate environment.

This is part of what we call in education non-conventional units, and has an enormous didactic value because it allows the measure to be experienced before it is formalized.

Some ways of measuring without instruments:

  • Your steps: Measure the classroom hallway or patio by counting how many steps you take.
  • Your palms: measure the length of a table or notebook using your hand.

Did you know that in ancient Egypt there were no rules as we know them today?
They used a measure called "real elbow", which was the distance from the elbow to the fingertips.
This unit was engraved on wooden rods used to build temples and pyramids.

Units of Measurement

Here I leave you a table that I have designed in which you can see all the units of measures related to the metro. It is important to know this as it will be essential in your day-to-day life.

How to convert from one unit to another?
Here’s a trick that NEVER fails:
  • When you go down on the table (from km to mm) multiply by 10 each step
  • When climbing in the table (from mm to km)   divide by 10 each step

How is it actually measured?

Once we understand that measuring is to compare with a "unit", we move on to conventional units of measurement. These are used all over the world, and have very curious names that you will now know.

Below I leave you a presentation of canva that I have designed, in it you can see the summary theory and a final challenge. Will you be able to do it?

And here I leave you a video to review what we have seen today:
